How to Stretch a Video to Any Aspect Ratio — 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 (Free)

Change a video between 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3 or a custom ratio. Stretch it, crop it, or fit it with bars, free in your browser with no watermark, or on our servers for big files.

The 60-second version

Open Stretch Video, drop your clip in, pick a mode (Stretch, Crop to Ratio or Fit with Bars) and a target ratio (9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube, 1:1 for a square post), and click Process. In browser mode the file never leaves your device and the download is free with no watermark. Big files go faster on our servers.

The rest of this guide is about picking the right mode, because that’s the choice that decides whether the result looks deliberate or broken.

Three ways to change the shape of a video

When a video has the wrong shape (you filmed horizontally and need vertical, say), there are exactly three things you can do with the picture:

  1. Stretch distorts the image to fill the new shape. Every pixel stays, but people and objects come out wider or taller than they are.
  2. Crop trims whatever doesn’t fit. Nothing is distorted, but you lose the edges.
  3. Fit with bars (letterbox or pillarbox) shrinks the picture to fit and fills the rest with a solid colour. Nothing is distorted or lost; you get bars instead.

Editors crop most of the time. Quick social posts often use bars. Stretching is mostly an intentional effect: the wide, squashed look in meme edits and intros. All three are one setting apart in the same tool.

Step by step

  1. Add your video. Stretch Video takes MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and GIF.
  2. Pick a mode: Stretch, Crop to Ratio, or Fit with Bars.
  3. Pick a target ratio: 16:9 Widescreen, 9:16 Vertical, 1:1 Square, 4:3 Classic, 3:2 Photo, 21:9 Ultrawide, or Custom Ratio, where you type any width:height such as 4:5 or 2.35:1.
  4. For Fit with Bars, pick a bar colour: black, white, dark gray, gray, dark blue, or any colour you choose.
  5. Choose output and quality: MP4, MKV or MOV, and Fast, Balanced or Smallest file.
  6. Process and download.

Common conversions

16:9 → 9:16 (horizontal to vertical, for TikTok, Reels and Shorts)

Use Crop to Ratio with 9:16. The sides are trimmed to a vertical frame, so this works when your subject is near the centre. If the important part sits at the edges, use Fit with Bars instead and accept bars above and below. Use Stretch here only if you want people to look elongated on purpose; for a normal social post it almost never looks right.

9:16 → 16:9 (phone video for YouTube or a TV)

  • Fit with Bars keeps the whole vertical picture with bars on the sides. It’s the standard way to post a phone clip to YouTube.
  • Crop to Ratio zooms into the middle and trims the top and bottom. Good when the subject fills the frame and you don’t mind losing heads or feet.

4:3 → 16:9 (old home video, SD recordings)

Crop to Ratio with 16:9 trims the top and bottom. Fit with Bars adds side bars instead, which is the authentic look for vintage footage; audiences expect bars around old video.

Instagram feed (4:5) and other custom shapes

Pick Custom Ratio and type the shape: 4:5 for the Instagram feed, 2.35:1 for a cinematic widescreen look, 5:4 for old monitors.

Stretching on purpose

For the deliberately stretched look rather than a ratio change, set the ratio to Custom Factor and use the Stretch Factor slider, from 1.1× to 4×. The height stays the same and the width grows:

  • 1.2–1.5× — a subtle wide-angle feel
  • 2× — the obvious comedic stretch from meme edits
  • 3–4× — deliberate, extreme distortion

Browser or our servers?

Every mode works both ways:

  • In your browser the video is processed on your own device. The file never leaves it, and the download is free with no watermark. The only limit is your device’s memory: phones and older laptops can run out of memory on big files, which is why the tool suggests our servers for files over 10 MB.
  • On our servers it’s faster for big files and doesn’t depend on your device. The result is free to preview. A free account downloads 2 clips a day of up to 30 seconds at up to 1080p; any plan downloads longer clips without a daily limit. Server uploads go up to 100 MB on a free account and much larger on paid plans.

Tips

  • Need an exact region rather than a ratio? Crop Video gives you a draggable box.
  • Mirrored selfie footage? Run it through Flip Video before or after.
  • Want the cinematic bars look? Add Letterbox adds black bars in ratios like 2.35:1 or 21:9.
  • Exact platform sizes (1080×1920 and so on): Resize Video has presets for each platform.

FAQ

Does changing the aspect ratio lose quality? All three modes re-encode the video, because the frame itself changes; at normal viewing the difference is hard to see. The Quality setting trades encoding speed against file size.

Will the audio stay? Yes. Only the picture changes; the sound is carried over.

Does it work on phones? Yes, in any modern browser on Android or iPhone. For big files on a phone, use server processing; it’s quicker and won’t run out of memory.

Is there a watermark? No. Server results are previewed first, then download clean with any plan, or within a free account’s 2 clips a day of up to 30 seconds.
