How to Invert Video Colors Online (Negative, X-Ray, Thermal — Free)
Invert the colors of any video, GIF or photo for a film-negative look, plus X-ray, thermal, solarize and animated variants. Free in your browser with no watermark, or on our servers for the extra effects.
The 60-second version
Open Invert Colors, drop in a video, GIF or photo, leave the effect on Invert (Negative), and click Process. In browser mode the plain negative is processed on your own device, so the file never leaves it, and the download is free with no watermark. The other eleven looks (X-Ray, Thermal Vision, Solarize, the animated ones and more) run on our servers.
What “invert colors” actually does
Inverting flips every pixel to its opposite. White becomes black, red becomes cyan, blue becomes yellow, skin turns blue-green. The result looks like a photographic film negative: the eerie, dreamy look behind horror edits, music videos and glitchy social clips.
For an 8-bit pixel the maths is one subtraction per channel:
R' = 255 − R
G' = 255 − G
B' = 255 − B
Do it twice and the numbers come back to where they started; inversion is its own inverse. (Each export is also a fresh encode, so a double-inverted file is extremely close to the original but not bit-for-bit identical.)
Step by step
- Add your file. Video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, OGG, FLV), a GIF, or a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP). A GIF comes back as a video; a photo comes back as a photo.
- Pick the effect. Invert (Negative) is the classic full negative and runs in your browser or on our servers. The rest run on our servers:
- X-Ray — a high-contrast negative
- Thermal Vision and Infrared — heat-map and false-colour camera looks
- Solarize, Hue Shift, Cyberpunk, Sepia / Vintage and Matcha (green psychedelic)
- Animated: Heat Camera, Inverted Shimmer and Inverted Heatwave
- Set the strength from 10% to 100%. 100% is a full negative; 30–50% gives a washed, colour-shifted film look instead.
- Choose the output. MP4, MKV or MOV for video, and Fast, Balanced or Smallest file for the encode.
- Process and download.
Browser or our servers?
- In your browser (Invert only): processed on your own device, the file never leaves it, and the download is free with no watermark. The limit is your device’s memory. Phones and older laptops struggle with big files, so for files over 10 MB the tool points you to the servers.
- On our servers (every effect): faster for big files and independent of your device. The result is free to preview. A free account downloads 2 clips a day of up to 30 seconds at up to 1080p; any plan downloads longer clips without a daily limit.
Where an inverted look works
| Use | Why it works |
|---|---|
| TikTok / Reels “glitch” edits | Cut a few inverted frames between normal ones for a strobe hit on the beat |
| Horror and thriller cuts | Negative skin tones look alien; pair with Reverse Video for unsettling motion |
| Music videos | Inverted slow motion is a staple of alt and indie videos |
| Retro looks | 30–50% strength gives a faded, colour-shifted film look without a full negative |
Tips
- Matching thumbnail or stills? Invert Image Colors does the same for photos, entirely in your browser.
- Only part of the clip? Cut the video to that segment first, invert it, then join the pieces with Merge Videos.
- The sound is untouched. Only the picture is inverted, so the audio track comes through as it was.
- Black-and-white footage only swaps dark and light when inverted. That’s a fine look of its own, but the colourful negative needs a colour source; skip Black & White before inverting if that’s what you want.
